Like many other species of fish, guppy species has changed colour over the half a million year time it's been on Earth. But one thing has never changed, it's the colour of a small coloured patch towards the back of the fish. This patch has always been orange. Sometimes it is a little yellowed or a little reddened but the majority are orange. The orange patches on the males are made of two different pigments, the first caretonoids which are yellow and they get from their food and the second, drosopterines which are red and their bodies naturally produce it. Scientists conducted an experiment where they provided the females with male Guppies that had low medium and high amounts of red pigment (drosopterines). The females immediately chose the males who only had medium drosopterines. According to this experiment the only reason this could have happened is for getting females and reproducing. I find this finding amazing, firstly because of the power evolution has even though we have no control over it. I also liked this because it is loosely linked with humanities class and it's quite cool to be able to link two subjects together.
